Tucked away on Napier Street behind a wall of flamboyant graffiti and a pair of leopard-print curtains, Libertino is Cape Town’s latest must-visit for anyone who takes their carbs seriously - but not themselves. This cheeky, meat-free Italian spot in De Waterkant is part disco, part trattoria, and 100% committed to fresh, flavour-packed food made with love (and just a little attitude).

Opened in December 2024, Libertino is already drawing a crowd for its vibrant atmosphere, whimsical interiors, and bold, seasonal menu. Step inside and you’re instantly transported: a neon-lit staircase leads to a space filled with lipstick-red walls, tattoo-style art, and a soundtrack that swings from 70s disco to indie pop - all perfectly Shazamable, of course. Whether you're settling in for a romantic candlelit dinner or clinking glasses with friends on a night out, Libertino hits that rare sweet spot between cosy and electric.

But make no mistake - this is more than just a pretty face. The food here is the real star. Everything from the pastas to the pizza dough is made fresh on site every day, rolled, stretched, and shaped by hand. Many of the cheeses are made in-house, and the menu shifts with the seasons to make the most of Cape Town’s local bounty.

Expect dishes that are bold, colourful, and just a little unexpected: grilled nectarines with whipped burrata, charred artichokes with saffron-infused aioli, lemony Sicilian prawns perfect for sharing, and complimentary focaccia so good you’ll wish they sold it by the loaf.

Pasta lovers can choose from generous individual or shareable bowls - like aubergine rigatoni, truffle-mushroom fettuccine, or spaghetti vongole - and pizzas come with creamy bases and indulgent toppings. The crema di zucca pizza is a standout, layering pumpkin cream, Gorgonzola, stracciatella, and toasted walnuts for a sweet-salty-crunchy flavour bomb that’s both comforting and elevated.

And don’t even think about skipping dessert. The traditional tiramisu is as rich and authentic as they come, while the chocolate mousse is sprinkled with flaky sea salt, providing a unique yet delectable explosion of flavours.

While the interiors are Insta-worthy, there’s also a relaxed, sun-drenched terrace for warm evenings, where the glow of the city sets the scene for long, happy nights.

There’s no meat on the menu, no shortcuts in the kitchen, and no pressure to fit into any mold. It’s an unapologetically fun, deeply flavourful celebration of food, friends, and a little sparkle on the side.
