South Africa’s biggest restaurant guide, Eat Out is back with their prestigious awards ceremony after 2 years. The highly anticipated award show highlights and celebrates the best in fine dining establishments around the country. Hosted on 20 November, the awards show has released the 42 shortlisted candidates for the upcoming extravaganza.

If you’re an avid foodie or just want to explore a new place to enjoy for your next lunch or dinner plans, the Eat Out awards are a good way to get familiar with restaurants you may have missed. The judges go to a variety of restaurants, and judge on a list of criteria to compile a short list. The candidates from this list are then awarded 1, 2 or 3 stars at the official event. Have a look at two of the candidates we featured in our magazine and online.

Ouzeri

A traditional Greek ouzeri is the social heart of its community, a place where people go to unwind, to eat, and to raise a glass of ouzo. This was chef Nic Charalambous’s primary aim with new Cape Town eatery, Ouzeri – to champion that tradition by spotlighting Greek-Cypriot cuisine.

For Nic, it was imperative that he strike a fine balance between classic and contemporary Greek cuisine while drawing on his Cypriot heritage. ‘I think that, locally, there is an understanding of Greek cuisine, but not necessarily Cypriot – and this is where Ouzeri comes in,’ he explains.

You can read more on this Greek-Cypriot gem here, alternatively try your hand at their fried mussels recipe or lamb and beef manti.

PIER by the Waterside

The PIER experience starts as soon as you walk through their modern glass doors, past the wine-rack walkway and up the stairs to the first floor. There is an overarching sense of Scandinavian-style simplicity when it comes to the interior: a soft colour palette, natural woods and wonderful natural lighting.
