Black Panther fever may be over but Wakanda will live on forever.  Renowned South African actor, Connie Chiume, portrayed a mining tribe elder in Marvel's historic blockbuster. The veteran thespian is filled with hope for the future. ‘I’ve realised that it’s never too late and you’re never too old. I’m hoping to be in the sequel…if there is a sequel.'

Chiume is currently running acting workshops at schools and across various townships through an organisation she co-founded, Destiny Films & Art Academy. She has been cast for a major role in a local drama series but cannot reveal details yet. However, she did share some of her favourite places, people and life-changing moments with us.

A place I’ve recently visited that most lived up to the hype is

…Los Angeles, without a doubt. I’m an artist and that is where things are happening. When I was there, I realise that I’m in the right profession and am exactly where I am meant to be. Acting is alive and LA is the  place to be for artist, actors, and musicians.

The last road trip I went on was

…From Joburg to Cape Town. There were frequent stops of course, and I just took in the beautiful landscapes, mountains and the Karoo. I am always in awe of our beautiful country. There is no place like South Africa.

My favourite movie of all time is

…I have to say Black Panther, unapologetically. I mean, the movie sold-out way before it was even released. People are still raving about it to date.

The one event that changed my life is

…When I decided to sacrifice being a teacher, something I had actually studied, for something I truly love, acting and showbiz.

The most personal piece of furniture that I own is

… a gorgeous, beautifully chair fit for a queen, that my son got me for my 50th birthday.

Special touches that make a house into a home

…All of the things that make you feel warm; quality hand-crafted carpets, beautiful and luxurious throws in the bedrooms, a fireplace and a whole lot of love.

The one chef I wish would cook for me every week is

…I have two. Reuben Riffel for those days when I want a fancy and sophisticated meal and Dorah Sithole for when I crave South African township flavours.

A book that I could read over and over again is

…Rhonda Byrne’s, The Secret.

My favourite designers are...

When it comes to

fashion, David Tlale and in the interior design space, Lebo Zondi of Ipapatse Interiors.

South Africa’s best-kept secret is

…It’s loaded with unbelievable talent, in all spheres, genres, races, and spaces. South Africa needs to unearth, nurture, value and celebrate its talent.
