South Africa is home to incredibly inspiring and interesting creative events across the board. You could spend the weekend at an exhibition or check out your local museum. Have you wanted to attend more art and design events this year? Well, whether you’re in South Africa or travelling around the world, we’ve rounded up some notable activities and events to add to your calendar for the month ahead.

International Public Art Festival

If you love walking around and exploring the street art that adorns the city centre, then the 7th International Public Art Festival is just for you. A celebration of public art and the creativity right on our doorstep, the festival is a must-see for anyone wanting to engage with the city.

Running from 1 to 5 March 2023 in the Mother City, there are a host of cool events on offer but the best part? The festival is free to enter and enjoy.

Pachipamwe (We Meet Again)

Exploring more of the work we have in Southern Africa, don’t miss the solo exhibition of figurative oil paintings by Zimbabwean artist Wycliffe Mundopa. The exhibition of large-scale canvases bear visceral witness to the complex lives of Zimbabwe’s women and children. The collection will be on view at the Southern Guild from 8 February to 20 April 2023.

Volume 4. Chaos Calamus – Interspecies Reciprocal Altruism

Seeing design and art intersect, be sure to check out a solo exhibition of new seating pods by Porky Hefer from 9 February to 20 April, 2023. Woven entirely in Kooboo cane and incorporating carved timber sculptures by artist Adam Birch for the first time, the exhibition will be happening at the Southern Guild so be sure to add it to your list.

Memoirs of Light

A compelling new fine art exhibition, ‘Memoirs of Light’ opens in March in Cape Town. The exhibition features Ramzi Mansour, along with acclaimed father and daughter artist duo, Martin and Samantha Lee Osner, and will present 18 new artworks on show for the first time. The exhibition aims to run from 18 March – 8 April 2023 at The Argyle in Woodstock.

All the international events to note

New York Build Expo 2023

Dubbed the largest construction and design show for New York and the Tri-state area, this award-winning expo returns to the Javitz Centre on 8 - 9 March.

The Collect Art Fair

One of the biggest international art events in the world, the international fair for contemporary craft and design returns to Somerset House from 3 - 5 March. You can book your tickets via the official site or watch the preview online.

Open House Copenhagen

Get a feel for Danish architecture at this inaugural event in Copenhagen. Don’t miss the first ever Open House Copenhagen, running from 25 - 26 March 2023 and is completely free to enter. According to the official site, Open House Copenhagen invites everyone inside buildings typically closed to the public and behind the walls of everything from palaces to secret technical installations we had no idea existed.
