As the sun sets over Stellenbosch, Spier Wine Farm will once again become a place for contemporary art. Returning for its ninth year from 26 February - 21 March 2027, Spier Light Art will bring a collection of light-based artworks to the farm’s historic buildings, pathways, and open spaces.
Curated by Vaughn Sadie, the 2027 exhibition invites artists to explore light as both a medium and a subject. The works are intended to offer different ways of experiencing the landscape, from interactive installations that encourage visitor participation to quieter pieces that leave space for reflection.
As darkness falls, the artworks will glow, shimmer and shift across the grounds, creating an exhibition that unfolds through movement, atmosphere, and the changing night sky. So instead of presenting light just as a visual effect, the exhibition takes into consideration the communication of ideas, shaping perceptions, and influencing the way people engage with their surroundings.
The experience is designed for a range of different audiences, with some installations offering moments of playfulness and others encouraging visitors to pause and take in their surroundings. Children are welcome, making the exhibition accessible for families as well as those interested in contemporary art and design.
Spier’s wider commitment to supporting African artists provides context for the exhibition. The wine farm houses one of South Africa’s largest contemporary art collections and supports visual and performing arts as ways of encouraging dialogue and engagement with the world around us.
