For the past 11 years, the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards have been recognising extraordinary, designer food and beverage spaces.

Out of a variety of entries from about 70 countries across the globe, a South African design studio claimed the Best Overall Restaurant title for the first time this year.

Tristan Du Plessis and his team of creatives at the TristanPlessis Studio are the design maestros behind the winner, Sandton’s latest supper club hot spot, Alice & Fifth. The luxury dining venue is currently one of the City of Gold’s trendiest underground avante-garde restaurants.

For each category, there were two shortlists and two winners, one winner for UK entries and one winner for international entries. The two overall winners of the 2019 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards are Alice & Fifth designed by TristanPlessisStudio and SPINE Beirut, a bar in Beirut, Lebanon designed by Gatserelia Design.

‘As a South African designer to be in the same room as my international design icons is an honour in itself but to be recognised on a global level in front of peers that I’ve looked up to since the beginning of my career is almost unbelievable. It also reaffirms what I believe in: the potential within South African design. Not only can we compete at an international level but also lead the field,’ said Tristan Du Plessis.

The Restaurant &Bar Design Awards feature the most influential global personalities from hospitality, design and lifestyle media on the judging panel and have previously included the Editor in Chief of Wallpaper*, Marcus Wareing and Thomas Heatherwick, making this an iconic achievement for South African design.
