As the cooler months roll in, we’re spending more time in our homes and what better time to make sure you have a gorgeous bouquet of blooms or candles to make the space feel cosy. The one thing about buying flowers or getting into flower trade as a hobby is that sometimes it feels their lifespan is short lived. But you can extend their bloom time with some flower food. Available at most retail stores and local florists, it’s also something that you can make at home.

We’ve found some helpful ways to recreate this at home so you always have a batch on hand. This YouTube video has an easy-to-make recipe with ingredients that you probably have in your pantry: from lemon juice to sugar and household bleach.

Watch the full video below:

The core ingredients in most flower food recipes seems to consist of the following: sugar (to feed the flowers), a form of citric acid and of course, bleach to kill bacteria that tends to thrive in your vase. While flower food will help keep your blooms looking good, you do need to keep an eye on your vase. Be sure to trim your flowers, remove any additional leaves that may be drooping (and ensure that they don’t fall in!) and change the water every 3 or so days.

These tips should hopefully greatly extend your flower’s lifespan, especially if you love buying a weekly or bi-monthly bunch.
