Industrial Chic

The unfussy kitchen in this artist’s haven blends the best of rustic and industrial. The light fixture, table, counter and tile backsplash were designed by Bill Cotton, a New York-based industrial designer.

Lighter Tones

A kitchen cabinet houses an array of blue-and-white china, enamelware and objets, inherited and collected by owner Dominique O’Connor. The romantic interior has evolved; layers upon layers tell stories of places visited and years spent collecting, the kitchen being no exception.

Classic Cape

Classic Cape accents and floral prints in a cheerful palette pay homage to a historical building and its idyllic setting. In the kitchen, silverware and willow-pattern crockery honour the house’s lineage.

Shapes and Textures

Antiques and collectables play a major role in owner Veronique Susman’s aesthetic. Eclecticism is key to the look-and-feel of her Plettenberg Bay beach farmhouse, the kitchen included.

Tuscan Love

Inspired by the traditional villas of Tuscany, this family home set in the Stellenbosch countryside gives precedence to privacy and sanctuary. Old wild olive branches create an interesting canvas for lighting in the Provençal-inspired kitchen.

Karoo Dream

Bold brass pendant lights complement the copper pots that lie underneath a marble-and-oak server. Texture is found in the face-brick wall and woven baskets.

Country Warmth

Nothing like black-and-white checkerboard floors in a country-style kitchen. A collection of Spode china and silverware decorate the kitchen where the family eats most of its meals, while a fireplace warms the space in winter.

Cream of the Crop

St Leger & Viney founder Gary Searle renovated a gracious Joburg home to create a prototype for uncomplicated yet sophisticated living, where quality trumps quantity. Metro tiles were custom made in Knysna to blend in with the cream palette. A series of paintings from Paris depict the artist’s chickens, each with their name included.

Provençal Living

Afro casual meets Euro country-chic in this Karoo home. The kitchen’s dresser and slipcovered dining chairs are more than slight references to Provençal living.

Boho Retreat

A textured ensemble of unpretentious furnishings finds the perfect fit in this Boho-chic Wellington retreat. In the sunlit breakfast area a French wine-tasting table still bears the marks of a past life.

Ranch-like Relaxation

Open shelving and understated finishes lend this small kitchen a relaxed aesthetic.
