From the play of natural light to the intentional selection of materials, these rooms prove that a well-designed dining space can be both an invitation to linger and a work of art in its own right.
Colour Theory
Farrow and Ball's olive paint plays a pivotal role in this space, with its deep, rich tones elegantly weaving together the natural elements to create a sophisticated harmony. Natural textures abound, from the striped jute rug, oak flooring, railroad beams on the ceiling and raw, unlacquered brass accents. The layers of varying woods introduce a soft, country-inspired charm, while the jute rug and woven dining chairs bring durability and an earthy appeal — ideal for a home filled with children and pets. The goal was to marry traditional style with a contemporary elegance that honours the home's original features while embracing its functionality.
Table Talk
Leigh Misso of River Brook Design and Construction designed this space to evoke grounded warmth and refined elegance — an inviting area for gathering, conversation and everyday beauty. At its heart is a custom burlwood table; its rich, organic character sets the tone for the room's enveloping ambiance. The walls, painted in Studio Green by Farrow and Ball, create a sophisticated and intimate backdrop — complemented by tailored ivory curtains that welcome natural light. Above, the wallpapered ceiling introduces an unexpected artistic touch, lending texture and quiet drama that draws the eye upward. This is given a modern contrast by the airy, cloud-like chandelier, playing against the room's traditional architecture. A study in contrasts — dark and light, classic and contemporary, tactile and refined — the space echoes the belief in creating timeless, soulful rooms that are intentionally layered.
Black Magic
This striking black dining table, paired with soft linen slipcovered chairs, creates a sophisticated contrast that grounds the space. The sculptural chandelier, with its gold and black accents, draws the eye upward, while the dramatic black ceiling painted in Farrow and Ball’s Off -Black adds depth and a modern edge. The rich wood flooring grounds the room, providing warmth that complements the furniture and decor. Flanking the antique sideboard, bold black lamps introduce a striking visual contrast that marries modern elements with classic pieces — creating a balanced and harmonious atmosphere. The carefully curated colour palette of blacks, neutrals and wood tones contributes to the room's chic, refined appeal.
A Light-Filled Sanctuary
This dining room exemplifies the power of simplicity. Located on the first floor, it is designed as an expansive, open-plan space perfect for effortless entertaining. The room’s true beauty lies in its soaring 3.4-metre ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows, which bathe the space in natural light. Rather than overcrowding the room with decor, designer Theresa Obermoser allowed the abundant light to illuminate and elevate the space. ‘From the moment I saw this apartment, I knew I wanted to open up the space and let the light pour in,’ she recalls.
On the Bench
‘I love a banquette seat — anytime it’s appropriate, it’s my go-to always,’ says Analisse Taft-Gertsen, founder of ALT For Living and co-founder of The 1818 Collective. ‘In this house, because it’s a small area, we gobbled up the whole corner (corners are a waste of space sometimes ). It allowed us to entertain up to 10 people with our table expanded, but also when it’s just me and my husband, we don’t feel like we are sitting at a massive table, feeling less intimate. We use this banquette table area for everything! Work, games with the family, formal dining, you name it. Even our dogs love taking a seat! When right for the space, it’s a great option — it’s also an incredible use for storage. In this banquette, all the drawers underneath hold our napkins, formal place settings, extra kitchenware and games to play!’
