Perched along a rugged ridge in Texas Hill Country, this expansive residence is a study in restraint, warmth and connection to the land. Surrounded by live oaks, cedar-covered slopes and sweeping panoramic views, the home balances the precision of contemporary architecture with an atmosphere that feels deeply grounded in nature and its surroundings.
Designed by architect Carlton Graham, and brought to life by Joshua Rice, the residence reflects the lifestyle aspirations of a family relocating from Los Angeles to Texas. Their vision was clear: a sophisticated modern home that retained the effortless indoor-outdoor connection of California living, while embracing the rugged beauty of Texas Hill Country.
The result is a serene retreat where long horizontal lines, tactile materials and bespoke artistry come together in harmony.
A Modern Home Rooted in the Landscape
The home’s architectural language is defined by its relationship to the surrounding terrain. Rather than imposing itself onto the ridge, the structure unfolds gradually through a sequence of low, linear volumes that mirror the horizon beyond.
Visitors arrive over a timber boardwalk that cuts through native brush and water features before reaching a limestone-clad image anchored by a monumental pivot door. From the outset, the experience feels immersive and intentional.
“The architecture uses long horizontal lines that echo the horizon, and the interiors follow the same approach,” says Joshua Rice.
Extensive glazing, deep overhangs, and open transitional spaces soften the divide between indoors and outdoors. Throughout the day, natural light transforms the interiors, while expansive views of oak-covered hills become the home’s focal point.
Interiors Defined by Texture and Warmth
On the inside, the palette is intentionally restrained. Warm whites, soft plaster finishes, and natural oak flooring establish a calm visual foundation that also allows the architecture and landscape to remain the central to the experience of the home in its entirety.
Custom millwork made from light oak, fumed elm, and walnut introduces a subtle tonal variation and tactile richness throughout the interiors. Meanwhile, carefully selected limestone and travertine surfaces provide some softness and depth without overwhelming the interiors.
The emphasis throughout is on longevity. Materials were selected not only for aesthetic appeal, but also for the way they will withstand gracefully over time alongside the surrounding landscape.
Moments of contrast are introduced moderately, yet effectively. In the wine room and formal living area, darker quartzite with deep brown and black streaking creates a dramatic counterpoint to the otherwise muted palette, accommodating sculptural quality in the spaces.
Sculptural Details Elevate the Living Spaces
Although the residence spans nearly 10,000 square feet, the interiors maintain some sense of intimacy through spatial planning and carefully curated details.
One of the home’s most striking features is the dramatic ceramic installation suspended above the dining room. Comprising 18 individually created sculptures by French artist Denis Castaing, the installation stretches across a double volume wall like a floating abstract piece.
“The individual pieces give the wall presence without feeling heavy, and the composition reads almost like a suspended landscape across the upper level,” Rice explains.
The artwork anchors the home’s social spaces, where a smooth Bulthaup kitchen flows seamlessly into the dining and living areas. The residence also includes a private library, theatre room, gym and an upper-level primary suite connected by a glazed gallery overlooking the central living spaces below.
The long, linear swimming pool outside further reinforces the home’s architectural rhythm, visually extending the horizon line into the landscape beyond.
The Importance of Bespoke Craftsmanship
A defining feature of the project is the level of custom detailing integrated throughout the home. Nearly every built-in element – from cabinetry and wall panelling, to furniture pieces – was designed specifically for the residence.
“As a designer, a project like this required a lot of custom work to keep the interiors feeling cohesive with the scale of the architecture,” says Rice.
As opposed to relying on singular statement pieces, luxury here is expressed through consistency, materiality, and precision. Repeated finishes in wood, metal and stone establish continuity across every room, creating interiors that feel refined without appearing overly formal.
The artistry also extends to the construction process itself. Building in a rural setting is said to have presented logistical challenges, particularly when sourcing highly specialised tradespeople who are capable of executing the project’s meticulous detailing.
The five-year project ultimately resulted in a home that demonstrates how contemporary architecture can feel both monumental and deeply personal.
A Contemporary Sanctuary in Texas Hill Country
What makes this residence especially compelling is its ability to balance opposing ideas effortlessly. The architecture is grand yet understated; modern yet warm; expansive yet deeply connected to the intimacy of nature.
By allowing the landscape to guide every design decision, the project achieves a rare sense of balance between architecture, and environment.
