A beautiful old home can do much of the decorating work for you. In this handsome Regency property, impressive proportions, tall ceilings, classic coving and a generous bay window provide an architectural backdrop full of character. Rather than competing with those details, the kitchen takes a quieter approach, allowing the original features to remain the focus while introducing a contemporary sense of ease.

The Regency kitchen balances pale cabinetry, Carrara marble and a rich brown island for a timeless, elegant finish

The result, created using a mix of deVOL's Classic English and Real Shaker cupboards, is an elegant interpretation of the English country kitchen. Pale, chalky cabinetry keeps the room light and restrained, while a deep reddish-brown island adds depth and contrast. Appliances are largely concealed, maintaining the clean visual lines, with the exception of a striking Wolf range cooker that becomes an intentional focal point. The kitchen was designed with Charles & Co, bringing together traditional detailing and a more contemporary sensibility.

A Calm Approach To Storage

For all its pared-back appearance, this is a kitchen designed to work hard. Closed and glazed cupboards, pantries, pan drawers and carefully considered storage keep everyday essentials organised and largely out of sight. A pair of marble shelves, supported by brass brackets, introduces a small opportunity for display, allowing a handful of treasured objects to become part of the room.

The use of natural materials is central to the scheme. Honed Carrara marble runs from the worktops up the wall, creating a continuous surface that adds texture and a sense of permanence. Its rounded edge softens the cabinetry, while the natural stone brings an understated sophistication that sits comfortably within the Regency setting.

Brass, Copper And Soft Light

The restrained palette is warmed by smaller details. Handcrafted brass and copper appear across the hardware, taps and round preparation sink, adding flashes of warmth against the paler cabinetry and cool marble.

Lighting plays an equally important role. As the evening light fades, deVOL's Heirloom Task Lights create intimate pools of illumination across the work surfaces rather than flooding the entire room with bright, uniform light. It is a subtle choice, but one that changes the character of the kitchen after dark, making it feel less like a purely functional workspace and more like somewhere to linger.

A Kitchen Designed For Living

Perhaps the most appealing aspect of this kitchen is the way it balances grandeur with everyday comfort. The architecture gives the room its sense of occasion, while the practical storage, natural materials and warm lighting make it feel lived-in rather than overly formal.

A seating area tucked into the bay window, although not designed by deVOL, provides a natural place to settle at the end of the day. It also reinforces the idea that a successful kitchen is about more than cabinetry and appliances: it should accommodate the slower rituals of home life, from morning coffee to evening conversations.

A cosy window seat creates a relaxed spot to linger, making the kitchen feel as welcoming at night as it is by day

This is where the Regency setting and contemporary design meet most successfully. Instead of attempting to recreate a period kitchen, the scheme borrows the qualities that make traditional English interiors enduring — natural materials, craftsmanship, symmetry, warmth and restraint — and interprets them through a cleaner modern lens.

The result is a kitchen that feels neither overly nostalgic nor aggressively contemporary. It is calm, practical and quietly luxurious, proving that when the architecture already has a strong story to tell, sometimes the smartest design decision is simply to listen to it.
