Just 30 minutes from Puerto Escondido, where the Pacific Ocean meets the wild landscapes of Oaxaca, a new hospitality destination is quietly changing the conversation around luxury travel. Called Kymaia, the 22-suite retreat has been conceived as a place where architecture, sustainability, wellness and gastronomy exist in careful balance, offering guests an experience that feels deeply connected to its surroundings.

The hotel takes its name from a Sanskrit word meaning miracle or wonder. It is a fitting description for a property that feels less like a traditional resort and more like an extension of the landscape itself.

Architecture Rooted in Place

From the outset, Kymaia was designed to work with the land rather than impose itself upon it. The architectural concept, developed by Mexican studio Productora, draws inspiration from traditional building techniques and materials, including stucco, clay and locally sourced timber. These elements not only reference Oaxaca's rich cultural heritage but also reinforce the hotel's commitment to environmental responsibility.

Throughout the property, sand-toned finishes and natural textures create a palette that feels both understated and sophisticated. Buildings emerge organically from the terrain, their forms echoing the colours and contours of the surrounding landscape. The effect is one of quiet elegance rather than overt spectacle.

A Contemporary Interpretation of Oaxacan Living

Kymaia's 22 suites have been carefully distributed across the site to preserve views and minimise disruption to the existing environment. Four Ocean Front Suites occupy the highest points of the property, offering uninterrupted ocean views and private pools. Elsewhere, the remaining accommodations are housed within structures inspired by pre-Hispanic pyramids, creating a dialogue between contemporary architecture and regional history.

The nine Senior Suites occupy the ground floor and open onto gardens and private pools. While the nine Junior Suites are positioned above, offering elevated ocean views and private hot tubs. Each accommodation has been designed to encourage a slower pace of living, with interiors that prioritise natural light, tactile materials and a strong connection to the outdoors.

Landscape as a Design Feature

What distinguishes Kymaia from many luxury resorts is the extent to which landscape regeneration informed the project. Rather than treating the gardens as decorative additions, the design team approached them as an integral part of the guest experience.

The property is organised around four distinct ecosystems: El Palmar, La Nopalera, El Humedal and El Guayacán. Together they recreate the native environments of the region, encouraging biodiversity while providing guests with an immersive introduction to Oaxaca's unique flora and fauna.

Walking through the grounds becomes a journey through the local landscape. Palm groves provide cool pockets of shade, native cacti celebrate the beauty of desert planting and restored wetlands reconnect visitors with the ecological richness of the coastline.

The hotel's minimalist wellness pavilion uses monolithic concrete forms and warm earth-toned finishes to create a contemplative retreat.

A Culinary Destination in Its Own Right

Food is central to the Kymaia experience. Under the direction of chefs Eduardo García, Vanessa Franco and Andrés Trujillo, the hotel's three restaurants explore the depth and diversity of Oaxacan cuisine through a contemporary lens.

Septimus serves as the property's signature dining destination, while Huachinango Bar offers a more relaxed atmosphere. Perhaps the most intriguing is La Cueva, an underground restaurant designed to deliver a more intimate and immersive dining experience.

Across all three venues, local ingredients take centre stage. Traditional cooking techniques are reinterpreted with precision and restraint, allowing the region's produce and culinary heritage to speak for themselves.

Private plunge pools and open-air living spaces extend the guest experience beyond the suite's interior walls.

Wellness Beyond the Spa

While Kymaia offers a spa and a range of wellness treatments, the broader philosophy extends beyond traditional notions of wellbeing. At its heart is the Shala, a dedicated space for yoga, meditation and Qigong, designed to foster connection between body and mind.

Guests are equally encouraged to engage with the surrounding landscape through activities including hiking, cycling and surfing. The emphasis is not on rigid wellness programmes but rather on creating opportunities to slow down, reconnect and experience the rhythms of the natural environment.
