With summer on the horizon in South Africa, now is the perfect time to plan that long-awaited solo escape. Whether you’re dreaming of a coastal hideaway, a countryside retreat or a city break abroad, a little preparation can make the difference between a memorable adventure and an avoidable travel headache.

Consider this your checklist for travelling solo this summer.

1. Choose a destination that suits your travel style

Before booking anything, decide what you want from your getaway. Is it restorative solitude, outdoor adventure, cultural immersion, or a little bit of everything? Research destinations with activities that actually interest you, alongside practical details such as the weather, transport links, and local customs.

If it’s your first solo trip, consider somewhere with reliable transport, accessible amenities, and accommodation close to the places you want to explore. Exciting escapes doesn’t have to mean complicated.

2. Book your accommodation wisely

Your hotel, guesthouse or holiday rental will be your home base, so look beyond the pretty pictures. Read recent reviews, check the property's exact location and confirm its security arrangements, reception hours, and local transport options.

Prioritise well-reviewed accommodation in an area suited to your plans. If you're arriving late, arrange your transfer in advance and confirm check-in procedures before departure.

A beautiful room is a bonus; peace of mind is essential.

3. Get your documents in order

Create a digital and physical folder containing your identification, booking confirmations, travel insurance details, emergency contacts, and transport reservations. For international travel, check passport validity, visa requirements, and any destination-specific entry rules well ahead of time.

Keep copies of important documents somewhere secure and separate from the originals. Save essential information offline, too, so you're not stranded when the Wi-Fi disappears.

4. Make a realistic budget

Solo travel means you get to call the shots, but you're also covering all the costs yourself. Account for accommodation, transport, meals, activities, travel insurance, and those irresistible little extras. Set aside an emergency fund for unexpected expenses, and check foreign transaction fees if you're travelling internationally.

Tip: Book your major expenses first, then leave room for spontaneous costs. That last-minute cooking class or seaside lunch might become the highlight of your trip.

5. Put safety at the top of your itinerary

Confidence and caution can coexist. Share your itinerary and accommodation details with someone you trust, check in regularly, and let them know if your plans change. Research safe transport options, save local emergency numbers, and familiarise yourself with the neighbourhood before heading out.

Avoid displaying expensive valuables, keep your belongings within sight and use reputable transport providers. For hikes, remote excursions or unfamiliar outdoor activities, consider getting registered guides or organised groups instead of going alone.

Trust your instincts: if a situation feels uncomfortable, leave.

Make room for new experiences, unexpected discoveries, and moments of well-deserved me-time.

6. Pack for sunshine, not every possible scenario

Summer calls for breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, sunglasses, a hat, and high-SPF sunscreen. Add a lightweight jacket for cooler evenings, a reusable water bottle, a portable charger, and any medication you might need.

Check the forecast before packing, and remember that mountain, coastal, and inland destinations can have very different conditions. A compact first-aid kit and a small day bag are also worth the luggage space.

7. Plan your essentials, then leave room for spontaneity

Have a loose itinerary that covers your must-do experiences, opening hours and transport arrangements, but resist scheduling every minute. Build in downtime for a leisurely breakfast, an unexpected gallery visit, or simply watching the world go by from your accommodation.

Download offline maps, research local restaurants, and save a few backup activities in case the weather changes. For beach days, follow local swimming guidance and stick to designated swimming areas.

8. Stay connected without being constantly online

Download the apps you'll need for navigation, bookings, and transport. If you're travelling abroad, research the roaming charges or get an eSIM before departure. Carry a power bank, always keep your phone charged, and save important contacts where you can access them quickly.

And while documenting your trip is part of the fun, consider posting your adventures in real time selectively. You don't need to broadcast your every move to make the memories count.

9. Embrace the joy of your own company

Finally, remember why you're going. Solo travel is an opportunity to discover what excites you when nobody else is influencing the decision. Book the museum tour, try the unfamiliar dish, strike up a conversation with locals, or spend an entire afternoon doing absolutely nothing.

You don't have to be endlessly outgoing or an expert traveller to enjoy your own company. You just have to be open to the experience.
