South African hotel, lodge and reserves group Newmark has told its guest that it was shutting down on Thursday to observe President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for a 21 days national lock down.

Ramaphosa announced a nationwide lockdown in South Africa as the country battles with the covid-19 outbreak.

Less than three hours before the lockdown Ramaphosa urged and pleaded with police officers to lead, guide and serve citizens with integrity and dignity during the national lockdown which comes into effect from Thursday midnight.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Newmark chairman Neil Markowitz, said the company was in full support of the coming national lockdown and would do everything in its power to assist guest at the hotel.

“We have always been committed to one truth: the safety of our people. In upholding our core values and in collaboration with the South African government, we are pausing our operations for 21 days.

“As of 26 March 2020, we will temporarily close all of the hotels within our Newmark portfolio to join South Africa and the rest of the world in solidarity in fighting the COVID-19 virus.

“We want to reassure you that we are moving forward in this historic time with preparedness, action and togetherness,” said Markowitz.
