At Spier Hotel in the Cape Winelands, fitness takes on a different rhythm with the opening of its new forest gym, a riverside pavilion that brings the outdoors into the everyday wellness experience.

Tucked beneath a canopy of indigenous trees along the Eerste River, the gym is reached by a winding path that leads past the hotel’s pool and into the surrounding forest. Here, the familiar energy of a fitness space is met by the beauty of the natural landscape, creating an environment where movement and mindfulness exist in equal measure.

A Space Shaped by Nature

The pavilion’s architecture is understated, allowing its surroundings to be the focal point. Clad in Shou Sugi Ban, a centuries-old Japanese technique that involves charring timber to create a distinctive dark finish, the exterior blends seamlessly into the forest.

Inside, untreated timber walls introduce warmth and a subtle woody fragrance, while floor-to-ceiling glazing draws in natural light and opens the room onto uninterrupted views of the river and trees. A timber deck extends towards the water, offering a closer connection to the landscape, while a built-in window seat provides a welcome place to rest between sets, catch your breath, or simply take in the view.

Natural timber finishes create a warm and understated interior.

Fitness With a View

Equipped with Technogym equipment and free weights, the gym offers everything needed for a focused workout, without compromising on its sense of tranquillity. A boxing tower, yoga mats and a dedicated stretching area allow for a more varied approach to movement, whether guests prefer strength training, a morning cardio session, or a slower start to the day.

Designed exclusively for hotel guests, the space accommodates different fitness routines and rhythms. After a day exploring the farm or the surrounding Winelands, it offers an opportunity to stretch, reset, and reconnect with the body.

It is the setting that makes the experience particularly memorable. The river remains in view throughout a workout, while the movement of the trees and the gentle presence of the surrounding forest create a sense of calm that feels worlds away from a conventional gym.

The riverside pavilion offers a peaceful setting for a workout surrounded by nature.

A Natural Extension of Spier’s Wellness Offering

The new pavilion joins Spier’s established wellness offering, which includes its spa and Cape Herbal Bath House, heated pool, Movement Studio, and walking and running trails through The Wilds.

Together, these experiences reflect a broader approach to wellbeing, one that extends beyond traditional treatments and structured exercise to embrace the restorative qualities of nature.

In a destination celebrated for its vineyards, art and considered hospitality, Spier’s new forest gym offers another reason to step outside. It is a reminder that wellness does not need to be confined to four walls, and that sometimes the most rewarding part of a workout is the opportunity to feel a little closer to nature.
