Colours, textures and furnishings all add to the atmosphere and ambiance of a room. Interior designer Odette Uys speaks on the hottest décor trends, accessories and soft luxurious textiles that will create an atmosphere of comfort in your bedroom.

Which colours are trending for interiors in 2018?

When I look at how dark jewel tones are currently being used, it reminds me of how classical masters like Vermeer used chiaroscuro in their paintings. High contrast, high impact. There is a certain sense of nostalgia to the current colour palette. As always, Mother Nature is the main source of inspiration, but looking more at what lies beneath the surface.

On the cool end of the spectrum, think dark brooding forest greens, deepest inky blues and teals, and of course charcoal and black (a lot of black!). There is richness to the new tones, and a sense of mystery.

The nomadic trend is inspired by tones like terracotta, mauve and burnt orange and beige which are a welcome return of real warmth to our colour lexicon.

Experimental – the word ‘trend’ will be used cautiously in the future, as even the notion of following a specific look will be an outdated concept. People are becoming more confident and willing to break a few rules, and experiment with combining different styles in their own homes.

Grey is on its way out, as was evident by its lack of presence at Maison&Objet Paris this year.

Which colours exude a sense of warmth and comfort?

Feminine colours in soft gradients are very soothing to the eye. Colours like soft taupe, ecru, cream, beige, blush and coral are great for creating a cocooning experience.

For a stronger look, terracotta is back and can be combined with warm greys and turquoise or mustard for an earthier feel that ties in with our fascination of all things nomadic.

Accessory and fabric wise, what are must haves to achieve a cosy atmosphere in a bedroom?

I think the best bedrooms are moody and mysterious. A place to rest and have magical dreams.

It is all about playing with yin/yang energy, balancing masculine and feminine energy. It calms the mind.

You can really play with detail in a bedroom. Lighting is a great way to introduce detail. Where possible I use hanging pendants to create more space on bedside tables, and to indulge my love for beautiful lighting. We are truly spoilt for choice nowadays. Anything from amorphous hand-blown glass to metallic pendants are great.

I like to over scale anchor pieces like beds, headboards, bedside pedestals, scatters, lights. Then add small intricate detail in objet, or in embroidered/beaded detail on scatters. I particularly love adding small bone inlay storage boxes to side tables. They are both decorative and functional.

As for fabrics, I love paring ‘dry’ matt neutrals like greige linen, with the juiciest velvets I can find to use on scatters or chairs. Adding a handmade detail, like mother-of-pearl buttons or embroidery give scatters a more bespoke feel.

Dip-dyed and ombre fabrics are great too, and butter-soft leather.

I always add a really luxurious throw, and am still very fond of a really good quality, generous faux fur throw. My version of layering, I guess.

Adding unusual wallpaper or a dark wall draws you into a room. Depending on the size and light quality in a room, you can go all-dark on the walls for a more intimate feel. For a few years now the trend has been to wallpaper an entire room instead of just one wall, but the accent wall trend is back.

Have you designed bedrooms and interiors with this kind of atmosphere?

Yes, definitely. I really love designing bedrooms. So much of a client’s personality and little quirks can be incorporated into the design of this very private space.

Some of my signatures are low-slung, extra-long headboards, glamorous pendant lights, soft fur throws, long scatters and intricate accessories can be seen in these images of recently completed projects.

I don’t particularly follow trends, and have my own favourites. Case in point: yellow is my favourite colour, which is the opposite of ultra-violet, Pantone’s colour of the year.
