As the summer season slows down and we start to feel autumn around the corner, we’re swapping out our iced drinks for warmer offerings. Tea drinking is an integral part of South African culture and we’re spoilt for choice with our wide range of botanicals. Tea culture is a global phenomenon, with roots in Asia to South America and all around the Middle East (and Africa, of course).

We’ve rounded up some local brands to check out - as tea is a great gift for a friend or loved one living abroad.

Sunbird Rooibos

Founded in 2016 and focusing on single origin premium tea products, Sunbird Rooibos has grown from strength to strength. The brand also prides itself on focusing on sustainability in all aspects of the process, from being EU-certified and reusable or recyclable packaging. Sunbird tea is also halaal certified and you can choose from seven different origin options. Shop the site for more or check out your local stockists.

Babylonstoren

Not just an award-winning wine farm with globally acclaimed luxury accommodation, Babylonstoren is also known for their premium artisanal pantry items. You can check it out online or at the actual farm shop on-site. If you feel like spoiling yourself or someone in your life, why not try the varieties of teas they have to offer? Choose between honeybush, rooibos or chamomile, packaged beautifully for gifting.

Khoisan Gourmet

Located in Clanwilliam and operating since 2005, Khoisan Gourmet has expanded to a variety of offerings. You can choose between loose leaf tea or pre packaged teas in a multitude of flavourings, think vanilla or zesty ginger. If you’re only about organic, you can explore the options online. For more information about the products, visit the official site or browse their stockists.
