On the eastern outskirts of Pretoria, about an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, Rosemary Hill offers an ideal weekend getaway with several unique accommodation options. One of these includes Cabinville, a collection of pods and cabins overlooking a small dam and a stretch of green fields. The smaller pods, where I stayed, feature a double bed, kitchenette and bathroom with a shower. The sleek contemporary finishes of its interior further accentuate the modern feel of the exterior.

A sliding door opens up into a small stoep with a hammock. It is the perfect location to sit down with a glass of wine and snacks for spectacular views of the sunsets over the stretch of the farm’s abundant fields. The pod is fully equipped with a gas stove and microwave. Cutlery, crockery and pots are available in the kitchenette should you want to make your own meals, which is not a necessity as there is a bustling coffee shop and restaurant on the estate, but we opted to make use of their braai facilities instead.

Rosemary Hill is a working organic farm, so expect to encounter the people and machines that harvest your fresh produce, making the rounds. Alongside these industrious pursuits, you’ll enjoy a peaceful environment and lots of activities.

The estate boasts several event venues and seems to be a favourite with the wedding-picture crowd. The 33 kilometres of trails are fairly easy to navigate, going through the actual farm where you will catch a sight of the farm animals along the way before wandering into the forest with multiple easy routes. For mountain bikers, rentals including a helmet, are on offer. There is also a well-equipped gym.

For a fun tour through the farm’s herb fields you may want to catch one of the frequent Segway tours or go horse riding (at an additional cost). You may also choose any spot on the farm, including the estate’s beautiful maze and surrounding areas, for a family picnic. An assortment of baskets include plant-based and gluten-free options. Beyond the pods, Rosemary Hill has several guest houses offering more space and great interiors with great attention to detail.
