Just like many other industries in South Africa, the Covid 19 pandemic and the national lockdown has cost many restaurant owners and employees their source of income by forcing them to shut down temporarily and some of them to close their doors for good.

With the help of technology, we can help some of these eateries by ordering online and even making donations to our favourite local spots. In 2019, the House & Garden team went on a quest to find out who makes the best burgers in foodie central, Bree Street, Cape Town. Here are our top three choices that will hopefully inspire you to treat yourself to a meal from your favourite spot and simultaneously lend a hand of support.

Clarke’s

The Clarke’s beef burger has been raved about since its inception. A lovingly made brioche bun envelops a grass-fed beef patty, topped with home-made pickles and a slice of Underburger cheese. The simplicity of the burger allows each ingredient to shine and thus makes it, arguably, the best burger on Bree Street.

Chocolate Pie (which we’ve dubbed “chocolate crack pie” because it’s so addictive)

The Fries

Burger & Lobster

According to B&L legend, what makes the eatery unique is their combination of homemade brioche buns, the use of our iconic South African crayfish and the fact that they make their own beef patty composition from three different unique prime cuts of beef.

We tried their renowned Wolf Burger, the Southern Fried Chicken Burger and trademark Burger & Lobster Burger.

Roast & Co.

Sister restaurant to the popular Bree Street venue, Headquarters (HQ), Roast & Co. brings fine dining to the classic roast chicken and comfort food.
