Nestled in the heart of South Africa's Cradle of Humankind, the Cabin Collective is a testament to family, perseverance, and a love for the land. What began as a quiet idea on Dewald Scholtz’s family farm has evolved into a luxurious yet understated retreat for nature lovers seeking serenity in the Gauteng countryside.

The vision for Cabin Collective was born on a quiet corner of the farm where Dewald often found solace. As the beauty and calm of this patch of veld drew him in, the thought grew - could this peaceful spot become a retreat for others? Joined by his wife, Michelle, and family friend Pieter Venter, Dewald began planning what would eventually become one of the best places to stay near the Cradle of Humankind.

From the outset, the concept was clear: a simple, luxurious getaway that let the land take centre stage. The couple envisioned a place where the outdoors and nature were brought into every corner of the cabin. The cabins were to be built with integrity, crafted to complement the landscape rather than disrupt it.

A key design decision was the use of shipping containers to form the cabins' foundation. The unconventional choice suited the couple's vision perfectly - compact, efficient, and adaptable - but it also presented its own set of challenges. The terrain was rugged, and moving materials to the secluded site tested the team’s ingenuity and patience. But when the first cabin was finally complete, it felt as though it had always been part of the landscape.

The use of local slate for the exterior cladding helped root the cabins in the land. The slate’s natural tones blended effortlessly with the surroundings, while large glass windows opened up the interiors to breathtaking views. Inside, the cabins were designed to evoke a sense of calm and luxury. Michelle carefully chose every detail, from plush linens to handpicked plants, creating a space where simplicity and comfort met in perfect harmony.

Despite its luxurious touches, the Cabin Collective remains a space of quiet refuge. With no grand gestures, the cabins invite guests to embrace the stillness and beauty of the surrounding nature. It is a place where time slows, and the land’s magic can truly be felt.

Guests arriving at Cabin Collective today will find a retreat that honours its roots in the Cradle of Humankind. Built on the Bristle Cone Nursery estate, where Dewald’s father Leon started cultivating plants in 1977, the property is steeped in a legacy of care for nature. The cabins’ design, executed by Anthrop Architects and PM Architects, and overseen by JC Van Der Linde & Venter Projects, ensures the structures remain in harmony with their environment, with minimal ecological impact.

The location itself - remote yet accessible - offers a peaceful escape while still allowing for exploration. Visitors can discover the historical richness of the Cradle of Humankind, as well as the scenic beauty of Hartbeespoort Dam. Yet, many find that the true magic of Cabin Collective lies in the quiet. There’s something about the stillness of the farm and the views over the veld that refreshes the soul.

For Dewald, Michelle, and the team behind Cabin Collective, this project is more than just a luxury getaway - it is a labour of love, a place where nature, family, and design come together to create something truly special. Whether you’re looking to unwind and connect with the land or seeking a secluded weekend escape, the Cabin Collective promises a retreat unlike any other.
