Designed by interior designer Anna Zueva for a young family of three, the 140-square-metre apartment within the premium Vrubelya 4 residential complex embraces bold choices, artistic expression and thoughtful functionality. Situated near Moscow's historic Artists’ Village, the home reflects the intellectual curiosity and creative spirit of its owner, resulting in an interior that feels deeply personal and refreshingly original.
Designing Around Challenges
The apartment arrived with many advantages. Large windows flood the interior with natural light, while the generous floor area provided flexibility in planning. The primary challenge came from the building's angled façade wall, which created unusually shaped rooms throughout the apartment. Rather than treating this as a limitation, Zueva used it as an opportunity to introduce innovative design solutions that enhance both flow and visual interest.
The brief was equally ambitious. The family required a clear distinction between private and public living areas, a spacious master suite complete with a walk-in wardrobe, and a multifunctional studio-style room for their teenage daughter. The result is a home that balances practical requirements with a highly expressive aesthetic.
An Entrance That Sets the Tone
From the moment visitors step through the front door, the apartment announces its distinctive character. The entrance hall features walls painted using a gradient technique, creating a sense of movement and artistic depth. Underfoot, custom-cut porcelain stoneware forms intricate floor patterns that feel more like artwork than flooring.
A theatrical touch comes in the form of a wardrobe portal concealed behind a gradient-fringed curtain, introducing an unexpected element of drama while reinforcing the home's creative personality. This willingness to embrace bold design decisions continues throughout the apartment.
Colour as a Design Language
One of the most striking aspects of the project is its sophisticated use of colour. Deep greens, rich ochres and layered blues create a palette that feels both energetic and calming. Rather than relying on colour as a decorative afterthought, it becomes an integral part of the architecture itself.
Green brings a connection to nature and tranquillity, while blue introduces a sense of balance and serenity. Together, these tones create an atmosphere that feels simultaneously vibrant and restful. Wood plays an equally important role, softening the interior while helping to define and organise different spaces. The combination results in rooms that feel rich and layered without becoming overwhelming.
A Living Space Designed for Modern Life
At the heart of the apartment is the open-plan kitchen and living area, carefully organised to accommodate cooking, dining and relaxation without sacrificing cohesion. A dramatic glass partition with black framing subtly separates the kitchen from the lounge, creating definition while maintaining visual openness. One of the project's most inventive features is a custom countertop that wraps around a structural column before extending into a television console supported by elegant brass legs.
Practicality remains a priority throughout. A concealed pantry houses a freezer, wine refrigerator, coffee station, boiler and extensive storage, all hidden behind cabinetry painted to blend seamlessly with the surrounding walls. This attention to detail allows the space to remain visually calm despite its many functions.
Two Rooms, Two Distinct Personalities
Among the designer's favourite spaces are the study and the master bedroom. Although they share a similar colour palette, each possesses a completely different mood.
The study feels dynamic and intellectually stimulating, reflecting the homeowner's interests in psychology, medicine, literature and art history. Rich green walls, curated furnishings and collected artworks create a sophisticated environment for reading and reflection.
The master bedroom, meanwhile, embraces softness and emotion. A remarkable bas-relief installation spans one wall, creating the illusion of water rippling across the surface. Finished with a textured sand application, the feature introduces movement and depth while reinforcing the room's tranquil atmosphere. Even the ceiling mouldings echo the concept, radiating outward like concentric circles spreading across water. The effect is immersive, calming and highly original.
A Teenager's Studio Retreat
Designing a room for a growing teenager requires a careful balance between practicality and self-expression. Rather than creating a conventional bedroom, Zueva approached the space as a self-contained studio. The room incorporates a sleeping area, generous wardrobe space, a study zone, dressing table and extensive storage. A glass-block partition introduces light while creating subtle separation between functions.
Art in Every Detail
Throughout the apartment, craftsmanship and customisation take centre stage. The client specifically requested that natural stone not be used, leading the designer to create bespoke porcelain stoneware patterns for each room. Herringbone timber flooring adds warmth and timelessness, while custom plaster mouldings provide individual character to every space. Artworks, textiles and decorative objects further reinforce the home's layered identity, creating an interior that feels collected rather than decorated.

Perhaps the greatest achievement of this project lies in its authenticity. Rather than following prevailing design trends, the apartment reflects the personality, interests and aspirations of the family who live there. Every room feels connected to the owner's curiosity, creativity and appreciation for culture.
