Inspired by Mediterranean landscapes, this apartment transforms nature, art and travel into a deeply personal home

Rather than beginning with mood boards or furniture catalogues, the designers behind this elegant 90-square-metre apartment started somewhere far more personal: the homeowners' memories. Designed for a well-travelled couple with a love for Southern Europe, Mediterranean coastlines and collecting art, the home reflects not a single interior style but an emotional connection to nature, travel and the objects that tell a life's story.

Located within a boutique residential complex in Moscow, the apartment was transformed from a developer-standard layout into a calming retreat inspired by the elements of water, air and earth. The result is a contemporary interior where architecture quietly supports the owners' growing collection of artworks and treasured finds from around the world.

The apartment's original floor plan presented several challenges, despite its generous windows that flood the interior with natural light. A complete reconfiguration allowed the design team to rethink the way the home functions. One of the most significant decisions was replacing the guest bathroom with a spacious primary bathroom, creating the opportunity for what would become the apartment's defining feature — a dramatic natural stone wall.

The kitchen was also entirely reimagined. Previously compact and disconnected, it now forms part of a sculptural open-plan living space finished in deep green porcelain stoneware. Built-in appliances and storage are concealed within sleek cabinetry, allowing the kitchen to read as one continuous architectural volume. Floor-to-ceiling dark green sheer curtains reinforce the monochromatic palette, giving the room a serene sense of cohesion.

Instead of asking the clients about preferred colours or decorating styles, the designers explored a different conversation altogether. Discussions centred on favourite destinations, museums, landscapes and the moments that had stayed with them long after returning home. It quickly became clear that nature — not design trends — would become the guiding concept for the project.

The interior is therefore built around three recurring themes: water, air and earth. Rich green stoneware recalls ocean waves, sandy neutrals echo Mediterranean coastlines, while soft greys and earthy tones provide a quiet backdrop for paintings, sculptures and collected objects. Rather than competing for attention, the architecture allows these personal pieces to become the true focal points of the home.

One of the apartment's most memorable spaces is the living room, where a painting titled Waiting for the Wind inspired the selection of a striking sculptural chandelier. Suspended above the seating area, its delicate elements gently sway with the slightest movement of air, creating soft sounds that reinforce the home's connection to nature and its invisible forces.

The bedroom adopts a quieter interpretation of the same concept. Here, textured wallpaper evokes still water covered by frost or a thin layer of ice, while muted tones create an atmosphere of complete calm. A treasured mirror from the owners' previous home introduces another layer of personal history, seamlessly linking past and present.

Materiality plays a leading role throughout the apartment. Italian travertine, natural wood, porcelain stoneware and tactile textiles create depth without unnecessary ornamentation. One of the most technically demanding aspects of the renovation involved sourcing a slab of natural stone near Venice for the bathroom. Arriving with a naturally weathered patina, it underwent careful sandblasting before being installed as two substantial slabs — an intricate process that required months of planning and precise structural calculations.

Storage was equally considered. A dedicated walk-in wardrobe doubles as a laundry room, while additional storage is cleverly integrated beneath the bed and within discreet cabinetry, ensuring the compact apartment remains visually uncluttered.

Perhaps the project's most memorable story began with an unusual client request. "We need a real rock in the bathroom," they said after returning from a Mediterranean holiday. What first sounded like a poetic metaphor quickly became a serious design mission, with the entire team debating different stone formations before finding the perfect slab.

The finished apartment demonstrates that meaningful interiors are rarely defined by one decorating style. Instead, this thoughtfully composed home captures memories, emotions and experiences, transforming them into an environment where art, architecture and nature exist in effortless harmony.
