In the heart of a prestigious neighbourhood in Toronto, Canada, a townhouse built in 2008 has been reimagined into a serene retreat that merges natural beauty with urban sophistication. Working with the homeowner (an empty nester seeking a fresh new look for her forever home) interior designer Gillian Gillies took on the challenge of a substantial renovation across the home’s three upper floors.

The result is a layered, immersive space that feels both tranquil and elegant, balancing the home's central location with a sense of nature, thanks to its ravine views. Gillian, originally from Edinburgh, was granted near-total creative freedom by her client, a privilege that led to an exquisite fusion of fresh design choices and timeless elegance. ‘We had a lot of fun and I pushed the boundaries a bit,’ recalls Gillian. ‘The design turned out to be fresh, understated and elegant — perfectly reflecting my client’s style.’

From the start, Gillies drew inspiration from the natural world, seamlessly incorporating various shades of green and soft pinks to echo the surrounding landscape. Key design elements throughout the home include the dramatic use of wallpaper and window treatments.

In the living room, chinoiserie-inspired curtains anchor the space, setting the tone for the main floor. The kitchen, another standout feature, boasts a custom plaster mural of magnolia branches and hummingbirds — a striking, unexpected touch that infuses the space with personality. The carefully curated mix of textures and materials, ranging from embroidered grasscloth wallpaper to plush mohair chairs, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Despite the home's intricate details, there is a sense of serenity in how each element complements the other. From the eclectic living room seating to the botanical mural in the powder room, the overall effect is a perfectly balanced home that is effortlessly elegant.

The townhouse is a true testament to the power of design to transform a space and create an environment that is as timeless as it is contemporary, a harmony of British and Canadian style.
