Set in the heart of Silicon Valley, this home by architecture and interior design studio LORO proves that modern living doesn't have to sacrifice warmth. Designed around the evolving needs of a family who had lived on the property for more than a decade, the home embraces flexibility, comfort, and refined design in equal measure.

Ribbed oak cabinetry, marble surfaces and expansive steel-framed glazing bring warmth and effortless sophistication to the heart of the home.

When the owners decided it was time for a fresh start, they weren't simply looking for a renovation. They wanted a home that reflected who they are today – one that could accommodate grown children, welcome extended family and ageing parents, support working from home, and still feel effortless when hosting friends.

Layered tones of natural timber, warm oak and soft metallic accents create a cohesive palette that flows throughout the home, adding richness, warmth and visual depth to every room.

Designing Around Nature

One of the project's most defining features is an existing oak tree that stood on the property long before the redesign began. Instead of treating it as an obstacle, LORO used the tree as a guiding element for the architecture.

A carefully selected wallcovering introduces subtle texture and depth, while integrated storage solutions ensure the space remains both beautiful and effortlessly functional.

This resulted in a U-shaped floor plan that wraps around outdoor spaces and carefully frames views of the landscape. Throughout the home, the relationship between architecture and nature feels intentional, creating a sense of calm that anchors the contemporary design.

Balancing contemporary elegance with everyday comfort, the dining area showcases the home's signature mix of crisp architectural lines and organic textures.

A Study in Contrast

The home's character emerges through a careful balance of opposites. Crisp rooflines, black steel-framed windows, and strong architectural forms are softened by curved details and tactile materials.

Thoughtful details elevate the bathroom experience, where brushed metallic finishes, natural stone and warm oak accents create a sense of understated luxury.

Ribbed white oak cabinetry, sculptural stone elements, rounded metalwork and custom detailing introduce moments of softness that offset the home's more structured framework. This continues through the material palette, where natural oak and white brick bring warmth and texture, while sleek steel and muted gold finishes add a sense of refinement.

Natural oak, tactile finishes and sculptural forms come together in a lounge designed for relaxation and connection.

Designed for Real Life

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the home is deeply practical. Every piece of custom cabinetry was designed around the family's specific needs, with hidden storage solutions, pull-outs and compartments are integrated throughout.

Calm and restorative, the bathrooms pair clean architectural lines with tactile natural materials, bringing a spa-like atmosphere into everyday family life.

The open-plan ground floor allows living, dining and kitchen spaces to connect effortlessly, while still feeling distinct through thoughtful transitions and architectural cues.

Upstairs, the children's bedrooms occupy one wing, while the primary suite sits on the opposite side, creating privacy and reinforcing the home's architectural form.

Layered materials, soft natural light and carefully curated details give this living space a refined yet welcoming atmosphere.

Refined Yet Relaxed

Perhaps the greatest achievement of the project is its atmosphere. LORO describes the home as "formally informal" – polished without sacrificing comfort.

Proof that practical spaces can be just as considered, the laundry room combines streamlined cabinetry, durable finishes and smart organisation to simplify daily routines.

Whether it's a summer gathering on the covered terrace, a quiet moment in the spa-like primary bathroom or an afternoon spent working from the light-filled home office, every space feels tailored to the rhythms of daily living.

The result is a contemporary family home that demonstrates how thoughtful design can be both beautiful and deeply livable.

Slim-profile steel doors dissolve the boundary between indoors and out, creating a seamless setting for entertaining and everyday family life.
