Winter in Cape Town has always been synonymous with long lunches, comforting flavours and exceptional wine. This year, however, the season is taking on an even richer narrative as The Belly Restaurant Group (BRG) launches an ambitious programme of collaborative dining experiences that celebrate the people behind South Africa's most remarkable ingredients.
Following the recent launch of The Belly Restaurant Group by acclaimed chef-restaurateurs Anouchka Horn and Neil Swart, the hospitality collective is bringing together some of the country's finest wineries, farmers, foragers and artisanal producers across its three acclaimed restaurants — Belly of the Beast, Galjoen and Seebamboes.
The limited-seat winter series places provenance, sustainability and storytelling firmly at the centre of every plate, reinforcing BRG's reputation as one of South Africa's most exciting independent hospitality groups.
Celebrating South African Producers
The Belly Restaurant Group has built its identity around meaningful partnerships with local producers. Its sustainability-led philosophy, whole-animal cooking approach and nostalgic interpretation of South African cuisine have earned widespread acclaim, while its expansion continues with three new concepts — BURI, Quagga and No Show — scheduled to open later this year. The winter collaboration series represents a natural extension of that philosophy.
"Everything we do starts with relationships – with farmers, fishers, foragers, winemakers and producers who care deeply about what they do," says Horn. "These dinners give us an opportunity to shine a light on the people behind the ingredients and to create experiences that are both delicious and meaningful." Rather than simply pairing food with wine, each event has been designed to showcase the stories, landscapes and craftsmanship behind every ingredient.
A Season Of Exceptional Pairings
The programme began at Galjoen with family-owned Stellenbosch estate Kleinood, where sustainable seafood is matched with meticulously crafted wines. Later in June, Seebamboes partnered with Veld & Sea for an intimate evening exploring the edible biodiversity of the Western Cape through foraged ingredients and seasonal flavours.
Galjoen then welcomes Strandveld Vineyards for a one-night-only celebration of ocean-inspired cuisine paired with wines produced from South Africa's southernmost vineyards. July continues the momentum with a diverse line-up of collaborations that highlight the breadth of South Africa's food culture.
Guests can experience expressive wine pairings with Blacksmith Wines, while Seebamboes travels to Betty's Bay to collaborate with Koring 'n Kaf before welcoming the artisan bakery back to Cape Town for a dinner celebrating grain, farming and friendship.
Culinary Storytelling Across Every Plate
Perhaps one of the most anticipated evenings is Italiaans-Afrikaans, where Galjoen joins forces with Lello's to explore the shared traditions of Italian and Afrikaans cooking. Served as a convivial long-table dinner for just 30 guests, the experience promises generous shared plates alongside locally produced Italian varietal wines.
Meanwhile, Belly of the Beast partners with regenerative dairy farm Cream of the Crop for a lunch celebrating the produce of the Piket-Bo-Berg. Founder Maria van Zyl will join diners to share the farm's story, highlighting regenerative agriculture, animal welfare and exceptional dairy craftsmanship.
The programme concludes with collaborations featuring Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants, known for championing provenance and whole-animal butchery, before Belly of the Beast hosts Durbanville's renowned Diemersdal Wines for an immersive food and wine experience.
Sustainability At The Heart Of Hospitality
What distinguishes these collaborations is their commitment to showcasing the people behind the ingredients. Every event places equal importance on the producer, the artisan and the landscape from which the food originates.
Swart believes this philosophy remains central to the group's future. "As The Belly Restaurant Group grows, our commitment remains the same: supporting local producers, championing sustainable practices and creating memorable experiences rooted in South African food culture. These collaborations are an exciting way to bring those values to life."
This emphasis on local sourcing, responsible farming and authentic partnerships reflects broader trends shaping South Africa's hospitality industry, where provenance has become as important as flavour.
Winter Dining Worth Planning For
For food lovers, wine enthusiasts and travellers alike, the winter series offers an opportunity to experience Cape Town's culinary landscape through carefully curated collaborations that celebrate seasonality and craftsmanship.
With limited seating available for every event, each dinner promises an intimate encounter with some of South Africa's leading chefs, winemakers, foragers and producers.
More than a calendar of special events, the Belly Restaurant Group's winter collaboration series is a celebration of community, creativity and the remarkable people shaping the future of South African cuisine — one memorable meal at a time.
