In one of central Moscow’s most storied neighbourhoods, a 19th-century residence has been masterfully reimagined for a new era. Designed by Inna Zavyalova of ADDburo, this 500-square-meter home elegantly fuses classical architecture with sophisticated modern design - creating a serene family sanctuary that pays homage to its heritage while offering every comfort of contemporary life.
Originally built in the early 1800s and later renovated into an eclectic architectural gem, the home’s historical significance provided both inspiration and challenge. “We aimed to preserve the architectural integrity of the exterior while completely reimagining the interior,” says Zavyalova. The restored façade stands as a testament to Moscow’s rich architectural lineage, while the interior reflects a curated evolution of form, function, and fine living.
At the heart of this transformation is a colour palette that balances serenity with depth - soft neutrals, moody blues, and rich textures define the atmosphere. These tones not only enhance the architectural character but also lend the space a calm, sophisticated rhythm. Durable, high-quality materials - marble, brass, wood, and bespoke textiles - add warmth, weight, and a sense of permanence to the home.
Custom millwork and built-in furnishings elevate functionality to an art form. Every detail was crafted in-house to ensure harmony. From arched bedroom windows to inviting sofa nooks in the study, every element contributes to the home’s rhythm and flow. Even the plaster cornices and paneling were intricately designed to reinforce the space’s classical proportions.
Lighting plays a pivotal role in the design narrative. After extensive research, vintage fixtures sourced from European markets now cast a soft, golden glow across rooms, bridging historical romance with modern elegance. They wanted each light to feel like a found treasure and bring soul to the space.
The residence’s layout, spanning several levels, is designed to accommodate a family that values both togetherness and privacy. Formal dining areas flow into relaxed lounges, while private quarters offer peace and seclusion. The homeowners - an entrepreneur and his family - collaborated closely with the design team to ensure every space supports both comfort and beauty.
Art, too, plays a central role. Works by acclaimed Russian artists - including Pavel Pepperstein and Valeriy Koshlyakov - punctuate the interiors. Each piece was selected not only for its intrinsic value but also for its ability to converse with the architecture. The goal was for each artwork to enhance the atmosphere without overpowering it.
After a meticulous two-year renovation, the result is a tranquil urban retreat - a harmonious blend of past and present, memory and modernity. It’s a home that captures a timeless elegance while speaking to a new generation’s appreciation for artistry, comfort, and the enduring beauty of well-considered design.
