In the heart of West Chelsea, just steps from the High Line, a colourful New York pied-à-terre offers a refreshing take on modern urban living. Designed by Samantha Tannehill of Tannehill Interiors, this 1,300-square-foot apartment is a dynamic mix of vibrant colour, tactile texture, and global storytelling - all wrapped in a cosy, boho-chic aesthetic.

For a California-based couple and their adult children, this two-bedroom, two-bath home is more than a stylish city stopover. “Their connection to the city is more than just a place to stay - it’s a vibrant hub for their family’s adventures,” says Tannehill. Whether visiting for the holidays, business, or Broadway nights, the family wanted a space that felt grounded, personal, and inviting.

A Perfect Match - By Chance

“The owners and I clicked right from the start,” recalls Tannehill. “Interestingly, I live down the hall from them, so we already had a neighborly connection. When they experienced a flood, it opened up the conversation about renovations.” What began as questions about flooring evolved into a full-scale transformation, resulting in a deeply personal home designed to reflect the family’s tastes and lifestyle - all completed in just seven months.

Colour, Texture, and Playfulness

Every corner of the apartment tells a story. A navy kitchen in Hale Navy by Benjamin Moore anchors the main living area, paired with Schoolhouse hardware and natural stone countertops for a fresh yet timeless feel.

The dining nook pops with a vibrant green banquette, illuminated by the Lloyd pendant from Soho Home, creating a cosy spot perfect for city brunches or evening chats.

“The client loves playful patterns and vibrant colours, so we embraced that with bold wallpapers in the bedrooms and the guest bathroom,” says Tannehill. The guest bedroom’s Black Moss wallpaper by Mitchell Black is paired with a Clementine bed from Lulu & Georgia and cosy merino wool rug by CB2. In the main suite, Dedar’s Art Deco 001 wallpaper adds warmth and visual depth.

The entryway is painted in Dimity by Farrow & Ball, a neutral that shifts with the light, setting the tone for a layered, lived-in experience. Throughout the apartment, tactile materials - bouclé chairs, velvet cushions, linen wallpaper - add a sense of richness, comfort, and quiet luxury.

A Palette with Purpose

The home’s design draws heavily from the family’s philanthropic work and travels, particularly in Africa. “While curating artwork from their personal collection, we discovered many pieces inspired by their travels in Africa, which we showcased on a gallery wall in the hallway,” Tannehill explains.

The colour palette, rich in earthy tones and soft vibrancy, pays homage to African crafts and textiles. Natural materials - woven baskets, textured ceramics, and vintage décor—blend effortlessly into the modern architectural backdrop of the building, completed in 2013.

Space to Breathe and Gather

The open layout welcomes natural light from every angle while still offering intimate nooks to relax, entertain, and unwind. The living room features the Theodore armchair and floor lamp from Soho Home, providing the perfect spot to decompress after a day in the city.

“We achieved this by blending rich colours, luxurious textures, and personal touches, ensuring that every time they walk through the door, they feel completely relaxed and surrounded by positive energy,” Tannehill notes.

This West Chelsea gem is more than just an urban escape - it’s a reflection of a family’s journey, personality, and deep love for New York City. With a blend of bold design, tactile beauty, and personal storytelling, it invites everyone who enters to feel instantly at home.
