Dark interiors have long challenged the notion that homes should be light, bright and minimalist. This striking 140m² country house near Moscow proves that embracing deeper tones can create spaces that feel sophisticated, intimate and exceptionally liveable. Designed by interior designer Alexander Minnebaev, founder of MAD's INTERIOR, the residence was created for a young homeowner with a passion for contemporary art, international travel and highly personalised interiors.

Dark tones, natural light and contemporary art create a refined interior rich in warmth and personality

Rather than following the familiar formula of white minimalism, the project explores the emotional impact of colour, texture and carefully curated design. The result is a contemporary home where architectural restraint meets artistic expression, delivering an atmosphere that is both dramatic and welcoming.

A Brief For Something Different

The design journey began with a clear direction from the client, who wanted to avoid the predictable nature of conventional minimalist interiors. According to Alexander Minnebaev, the owner envisioned "an interior with a more intimate, atmospheric and slightly dramatic character."

The response was a concept centred on dark elegance, using bold colours and carefully selected artworks to soften the strong architectural framework. Every room was designed to feel layered and personal without becoming visually overwhelming.

Architecture Sets The Mood

The home's architecture played a significant role in shaping the design. Expansive floor-to-ceiling glazing floods the interiors with natural light, while exposed dark timber beams establish a bold structural rhythm throughout the house.

Instead of trying to disguise these dramatic architectural elements, the designer chose to celebrate them. Black-painted walls, ceilings and concealed cabinetry create a monolithic backdrop that allows furniture, artwork and natural materials to command attention. Despite the darker palette, generous glazing ensures the interiors remain bright during the day, creating a constantly shifting play of light and shadow.

Colour Creates Emotion

Colour is used strategically rather than generously. Black and graphite provide a calm, cohesive canvas, while carefully placed crimson, burgundy and emerald accents introduce warmth and visual energy.

These richer shades appear through upholstered seating, rugs, artworks and decorative accessories, creating a thread that connects each room. The effect is refined rather than theatrical, with every colour choice contributing to the home's carefully balanced mood.

The inspiration comes partly from contemporary artists known for saturated colour palettes, as well as the intimate ambience of Manhattan's iconic speakeasy bars.

Rich Materials Bring Warmth

Although visually dramatic, the home relies heavily on tactile materials to ensure comfort. Natural wood veneer softens the darker finishes, while large-format porcelain tiles with a concrete-effect surface provide durability without sacrificing elegance.

In the bathrooms, oversized slate-look tiles add texture and depth, creating spaces that feel luxurious yet understated. Painting the ceilings black also enhances the architectural experience, visually dissolving overhead planes and drawing the eye towards the carefully selected furnishings and artwork.

Art And Vintage Finds Complete The Story

Art was never intended as decoration alone. Instead, it forms the emotional centre of the home. Several treasured pieces travelled with the homeowner, including Asian chinoiserie panels sourced in Belgium that now sit above the master bed. Vintage Scandinavian furniture, including Swedish armchairs from the 1960s and 1970s, an early twentieth-century French display cabinet and the iconic Funktus 534 chair by Yrjö Kukkapuro, add authenticity and character.

Above the living area hangs the Fontan chandelier by Bezhko, which transforms the room after sunset with cascading layers of warm light, softening the otherwise architectural interior.

A Contemporary Home With Lasting Character

The greatest strength of this Moscow country house lies in its balance. Clean architectural lines coexist comfortably with expressive art, vintage furniture and bespoke joinery, creating interiors that feel deeply personal without becoming cluttered.

Rather than following fleeting interior trends, Alexander Minnebaev has created a home built around atmosphere, craftsmanship and individuality. It demonstrates that dark interiors need not feel heavy or oppressive. When paired with natural materials, thoughtful lighting and meaningful collections, they become rich, inviting environments that celebrate personality as much as design.
