Winter is in full force in South Africa and we are truly feeling the chill. While many of us would love to spend all day cosily tucked away in our homes, that, sadly is hardly ever possible, with the hurly-burly of work and various other pressing stressors forcing us to leave the safe cocoons of our abodes.

With home often a safe haven from the harsh world and its often harsher people, it’s important for your home to feel peaceful, welcoming, warm, and snug. If you have been looking for ways to make your living room a warmer place to be in, we have a few ideas to integrate into your space without a full renovation required.

1. Throws are lovely

Add a throw or two to your couch to give it a deliciously welcoming aesthetic. There is nothing better than kicking off your shoes and ‘outside clothes’ after a long day at school or the office (or both!), snuggling yourself under a cosy blanket, and watching your favourite movie or series. There are various textures of throws to play around with, with wool being a top winter trend because of the luxurious warmth it exudes.

2. Fireplace moments

If you have a fireplace, make use of it. With the cold evenings here to stay for at least a few months, having a lovely fire to warm up your living room is ideal, provided that it has been prepped and that the necessary precautions are taken to prevent anyone from getting hurt.

3. Add a few plants and flowers to the space

If your living room is looking extra gloomy during winter, incorporate a few flowers or plants therein. A few greens are also wonderful for feng shui and good energy flow within your living room. You don’t need to overload the area with florae, but incorporating a few pieces can only be beneficial for your overall well-being.

4. Cosy lighting

Have softer lighting in your space to give it a wonderfully snug and cosy appeal. There is also something wonderfully romantic about softer lights that set the mood for relaxation and gives any room within a home a sense of calm.
