Anyone who has fallen for Beata Heuman’s distinctive Shoppa line since it launched at the beginning of 2020 should make a point of ordering her first book, Every Room Should Sing, immediately.

Published by Rizzoli, the volume sees the Nicky Haslam alumna share her philosophy for creating a unique and welcoming home, with one of her colourful design projects used to illustrate each tip.

Her own flat in Earl’s Court offers a welcome lesson in making the most of a smaller place, for example, while a Studio McLeod home provides inspiration for transforming the functional into something beautiful. While you wait for your copy to arrive, give your bedroom a refresh with Heuman’s suggestions, below.

Splurge on some lovely bedding

“There’s just nothing better than fresh linens. In terms of colours, keep it light. I prefer a crisp white, but light blues and rosy pinks are nice too. You can then add splashes of colour with throw pillows. I personally love our Florentine Flowers Bolster Cushion on beds, or a selection from Pentreath & Hall. In terms of bedspreads, Belinda Davies’s eiderdowns are my go-to.”

Adjust your lighting

“Lighting makes such a difference in any room, but in a bedroom it’s particularly important. Definitely invest in some lamps with a warmer glow. If your bedroom is small, consider a directional wall light with a shade, which leaves your bedside table free for a novel or a vase of flowers.”

Treat yourself like you would a guest

“The little details matter a lot in bedrooms, so it’s nice to fill a carafe with water and have some pretty glasses to hand. It just makes the place feel like a sanctuary. The Conran Shop has lovely glassware. Another trick is to lay a sheepskin rug down on either side of your bed – especially if you’ve got wooden floors – so your feet land on something soft first thing in the morning.”

Hang a mirror

“If you go to the right places, you can find mirrors that are quite affordable. There’s a website called Auction Net, which has tons of vintage options. If you’re handy with a paintbrush, you can also get a mirror with a plain wooden frame and paint your own design.”

Update your furniture with different gorgeous handles

You would be surprised what a difference it makes when you upgrade the hardware on your wardrobe or bedside table. In my house, my closet is painted the same light blue as the walls, but then it has these distinctive brass handles, which really elevate it.”

Display your books

“Honestly, books are my favourite objects to display in pretty much any room. Your selection is a reflection of who you are, and it’s great to showcase that. Installing a shelf and filling it with your favourite novels is a really quick way to give a room some personality.”

Get a radio to help cut back on screen time in bed

“I love having an old-fashioned radio in my bedroom. I used to listen to one all of the time growing up in the countryside. I still find it really comforting to have Radio 4 on in the background if I’m home alone. The Roberts radios are great, but there are so many cool options by brand such as Revo and Tivoli that also work with Bluetooth, as well.”
